What is Black Friday?
Black Friday is another name for the Friday after Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving is always celebrated on the 4th Thursday of November. And the next day, Friday, is Black Friday. In the US the day after Thanksgiving has been seen as the beginning of the Christmas Shopping season since 1952… It soon became a trend which many shops around the world have adapted. Today Black Friday is widely known in most of the countries around the world and in many countries, stores have huge Black friday sales.

What happens on Black friday?
On Black Friday many stores offer very high sales. Shops open their doors early to let long lanes of customers in the shop. Black Friday is not an official holiday. Usually Black Friday is one of the most busiest shopping day of the year. All shops are fully crowded and in some cases things end up in fighting for items because everyone wishes to buy their desired product for cheap…. So when there is one product left and more than one admirers standing in front of the item, it is mostly the situation of who comes first gets it and who not … well they don’t get to buy it for cheap because the item is sold out. Because of this, people try to avoid disappontment and get up early to be in time in the shops. They wait for hours and in the middle of a huge crowd, they push and enter stores. There are many cases of violence between shoppers on Black Fridays. With minor injuries usually as a result of being pushed or thrown to the ground in small stampedes. But sometimes there is also serious injuries and deliberate violence as a result of fights between shoppers.

Black Friday 2020 – The best deals during pandemic
For Black Friday 2020, all stores mainly focussed on online sales. Most of the shops offered their sales on limited products and online. Customers could search on the web for the best deals and buy them online. Very soon many of the products were sold out online. What shops also did for the physical shoppers is spread the offers through a few days. For example some offers are valid on the friday, some offers were only valid on the saturday and some only on the sunday.

How shoppers shopped on Black Friday during the pandemic?
It is an unusual sight to see people far from each other on a black friday. But due to covid-19 public had to be safe and follow the rules. Where normally poeple stand in a crowd together to enter shops, during the corona pandemic things were quite different. Shops created lanes and people should stand in a line behind each other at a distance keeping social distancing in mind. The queues were not long and many cities even requested shoppers not to come to the shopping centre because it soon became very crowded. The most profit has been made with online sales.

Let us all hope that Black Friday 2021 will be the normal way we used to shop!
